What buyers should specify

  • Food type and shelf-life target
  • Retort, frozen, ambient or hot-fill conditions
  • Barrier requirements and material preference
  • Pack size, pouch style or container capacity
  • Printing method and artwork requirements
  • Order quantity, annual volume and delivery destination
  • Required food-contact or sustainability certifications

Match the package to the food process

Food packaging should be specified around the actual process, not just the appearance of the pouch or container. Retort products need structures that tolerate sterilization temperature and time. Frozen products need seal and impact performance at low temperature. Coffee, snacks and dry foods may prioritize oxygen, moisture or aroma barrier. Liquid products add requirements for seal strength, spouts and leak resistance.

Barrier, food-contact and sustainability claims

Ask suppliers to explain the proposed structure and why it suits the product and shelf-life target. Food-contact documentation should match the destination market and intended use. Recyclable, mono-material, compostable or recycled-content claims should also be checked against the actual structure and local recycling infrastructure rather than accepted as generic marketing language.

MOQ, printing setup and repeat orders

Flexible food packaging MOQ is often influenced by film runs, printing cylinders or plates and bag-making efficiency. For branded packaging, buyers should separate one-time print setup from repeat-order unit cost and ask how color consistency is controlled across production lots. Where shelf life is critical, approve both artwork and functional performance before mass production.

FAQ

What should buyers confirm before ordering retort packaging?

Confirm the actual retort temperature and time, product characteristics, target shelf life, seal requirements and proposed laminate structure. A pouch described simply as “retort” still needs application-specific validation.

Should a buyer specify an exact film structure?

If a validated structure already exists, include it. Otherwise provide the food type, filling process, shelf-life target and barrier requirements so suppliers can recommend structures for testing rather than forcing an unverified specification.
