Sustainable Packaging
Sustainable Packaging in Asia
Sustainable packaging decisions require more than a material label. Package Asia will compare recyclable, reusable, compostable, recycled-content and material-reduction options together with cost, performance, infrastructure and sourcing availability across Asia.
Common sustainability routes
Use less material through right-sizing, downgauging and structural redesign.
Increase recycled input where product safety, quality and regulation permit.
Prefer structures compatible with realistic collection and recycling systems.
Design packaging and logistics around multiple use cycles where viable.
What buyers should verify
- Evidence behind environmental claims
- Actual local recycling or composting infrastructure
- Barrier, shelf-life and product-protection performance
- MOQ and cost compared with conventional alternatives
- Certification and chain-of-custody documentation where relevant
- Whether a lower-impact option increases transport or product-loss risk
The best option depends on product, market and disposal system. A technically recyclable structure is not automatically the most sustainable choice if it is not collected or processed in the destination market.
Compare claims against the destination market
Ask a supplier to state exactly which component is recyclable, contains recycled content or is designed for reuse. A coating, label, adhesive, closure or mixed-material layer can change the answer for the complete package. Keep a written specification and supporting evidence for the particular product offered.
Collection and treatment differ by market. Before using an environmental claim, check the destination’s applicable rules and available collection route. Confirm that an alternative still protects the product during filling, storage and transport; product loss can outweigh a packaging change.
Shortlist questions
- What is the full material structure, including labels, closures and adhesives?
- What evidence supports the claim, and does it cover this exact SKU?
- How do barrier, shelf life, MOQ, tooling and landed cost compare with the current pack?
