Start with the packaging function
Reducing environmental impact should not compromise the package’s primary job: protecting the product. If a weaker package increases damage, leakage or food waste, the environmental result may be worse than a conventional format. Define barrier performance, strength, shelf life, temperature exposure and distribution conditions before selecting a material.
Why this step gets skipped
Sustainability initiatives are often driven by marketing or procurement targets on a deadline, which can push material selection ahead of a proper performance review. A supplier should be able to state the percentage and type of recycled content. Check recyclability in the destination market
A package can technically be recyclable yet have little practical chance of being recycled where it is sold. Multi-layer structures, labels, coatings, adhesives, pigments and closures can affect real-world recyclability. Consider the collection and sorting infrastructure in the destination market rather than relying only on a material label — a mono-material pouch may be recyclable in theory but unrecyclable in practice if no local facility accepts flexible plastics.
Be careful with compostable claims
Industrial-compostable and home-compostable packaging require different conditions, and certification standards vary by market. Ask what standard has been tested, which specific component was tested (the film, the ink, the adhesive — not just the base material), and whether appropriate composting infrastructure actually exists where the package will be discarded. A compostable claim is close to meaningless if the destination market has no industrial composting access. Compare total cost, not material price alone
Sustainable formats can change package weight, cube efficiency, tooling, printing, production speed and shipping cost. In some cases material cost rises while transport or damage costs fall — a lighter, more efficient format can reduce landed cost even if the per-unit material price is higher. Material choice can also affect EPR compliance fees in destination markets with eco-modulated schemes. Buyers should compare the complete system rather than a single unit price, and confirm whether switching materials changes tooling requirements or MOQ.
